Trick or treat: PlayStation Plus October 2016

It’s that time of month again, time to go grab your free games if you are a PlayStation Plus subscriber. This is also the first full month that the service has jumped up to $60, so is PlayStation passing out treats this Halloween month or have we all been tricked?

Well, I have to say it is a mixed bag. Just like not everyone likes Almond Joy, there’s probably a few games in this treat bag you won’t care for. But there’s always that one kid that LOVES Almond Joy, and likewise I think this month has something for everybody. It’s hard to think of a recent month with such a wide variety of games; there’s a nostalgic 80’s brawler, a revamped classic horror game, a romantic steampunk visual novel, a text heavy indie adventure about love and depression, a gorgeous tropical god game, and an ATV racer also set in a tropical paradise.

So, don’t complain about the waxy Starbursts, just give them to your little brother and enjoy your Snickers. If you want to just grab this month’s games and start playing, here are the links below. Scroll a little further and you can learn what you’re getting into before you take a big bite of black licorice.

Resident Evil Remastered

This is the classic that defined survival horror. Many of the concepts introduced in this game have…survived into modern horror and survival games made today many, many years later. The game has been reanimated with new HD graphics, 5.1 surround sound, and new control options, but fortunately they kept the original terrible voice acting. Trust me, its the most charming part of the game. And I still hate those dogs.

Transformers: Devastation

If you were a kid in the 80’s and loved the Transformers, this is the game you’ve been waiting for 30 years. None of that Michael Bay nonsense, this game features the original Autobots and Decepticons in all their primary color glory. Many of the original voice actors are included in this game, making this game a major nostalgic treat. Platinum Games is no stranger to brawler combat, having developed many other games including Bayonetta and Metal Gear: Revengeance. Take this one for a spin and you’ll be rewarded with not only a trip down memory lane, but also a satisfying robot-on-robot beat ’em up.

Mad Riders

Have you ever seen a tropical paradise lush with green foliage, towering cliffs split by roaring waterfalls, and thought, “I wish I could jump an ATV through that? Mad Riders is your game! Looks like a lot of fun!

From Dust

From Dust is a simulation or God game that offers dramatic changes to the environment. Fluid physics are a big part of the game, and as you carve out earth, water will rush in and further erode the area. Through careful manipulation of the environment, you can improve the living conditions of the tribe in your care, while a mis-step will mean they are plunged into a watery grave. You will also have to use your godlike powers to avert natural disasters like volcanoes, tsunamis, and wildfires.

Restricted to an abandoned mansion on the outskirts of London in fulfillment of a promise to her father, lonely Cardia lives day to day isolated from the world. Her body carries a deadly poison that rots or melts anything her skin touches, prompting the locals to call her a “monster.”

In this visual novel, you will experience your own romantic fairytale set in a steampunk-esque Europe. Based on your choices, Cardia will fall in love with one of five European literary figures such as Arsene Lupin, Abraham Van Helsing, Victor Frankenstein, Impey Barbicane, and Count Saint-Germain.

Actual Sunlight

Suitably dark for this autumn month, this game is rated Mature not for sex and violence, but for its realistic portrayal of the crushing reality of adult life. Actual Sunlight is a short interactive story about love, depression and the corporation. The game puts you in the role of Evan Winter, a young professional in Toronto, as he moves through three distinct periods of his life. The story is linear, unavoidable and (hopefully) thought-provoking. You experience his perceptions, fall under the consequences of his decisions, and meet everyone who didn’t change him.

If Actual Sunlight gets you down, remember you can always set your Vita aside and go smash some robots or jump over a waterfall with one of the other free games this month.

Hopefully some of these games has you excited for PlayStation Plus this month, and we’d love to hear which ones you’ll be playing in the comments.
